AI Competition

One bot to rule the board!

Starting March 2018 we will host an AI competition. You will be able to start experimenting during February.
The goal is to create an AI agent capable of playing a simple board game created for the competition.
You can develop it in a programming language of your choice (supported languages to be announced soon).

How to prepare the perfect cup of coffee

  • Duration: 2 Hours

This workshop focuses on coffee extraction using filters. During the workshop, the barista from Chá das Cinco will show you how to prepare the perfect cup of coffee at home, using some filter extraction equipment (V60, Chemex, and Aeropress), as well as explain a bit of the science behind coffee extraction, and how you can use that knowledge to alter the taste of the drink.

Hugo Ferraz

I am 41 years old, and I have dedicated half my life to video editing. After meeting my girlfriend Sofia in early 2015, we decided to create Chá das Cinco - a pastry studio, where we serve specialty coffee, fine teas, and artisan pastry. A year later, I attended the beginner barista course at "Academia Barista Delta", and realized there is still a lot to do in this area. Between books, magazines, and websites about coffee, and, in particular specialty coffee, I realized I needed to learn even more. And so, in early 2017 I received my SCA barista certification and brewing at "Academia do Café", which allowed me to consolidate some ideas and acquire experience in these 2 distinct areas of the coffee world. I also teach old and new baristas alike, and dedicate my time understanding all the questions that come along about coffee and its extraction.

Don’t waste your time! UE4 performance tips

Historically games are all about hitting silky smooth frame rates, and that means at least 60 frames per second. This implies that you have AT MOST 16.6 milliseconds to do all the awesome stuff that your game does. That’s certainly a lot of processor instructions, but you can run quickly out of time depending on what you are doing or if you don’t think about its complexity.

Hopefully, in this workshop you will learn some optimization techniques to help you hit that goal. We will talk about our experience optimizing the game thread and avoid making some common mistakes that can lead to unnecessary waste of our precious resource.

We will mainly focus on:

  • Adopting a event driven design being aware of the tradeoffs;
  • How to avoid repetitive work and logic that runs every frame or frequently;
  • How to identify opportunities to improve logic and performance;
  • How to leverage Unreal Engine 4 profiler to measure your logic’s performance.

Cristiano Carvalheiro

Cristiano has been at Abyssal since he graduated from MIEIC in 2016. With his constant thirst for knowledge and never-ending stamina, has been gathering experience with game engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine 4 in the past few years. He is always prepared to annoy everyone around him about doing things the right way. Even though he still has a long way to go when it comes about to know what is the right way. Having annoyed plenty of people about UE4, he’s ready to pass some of that knowledge onto you.

João Portela

Software Engineer at Abyssal, he’s been there since the beginning (2012). Naturally curious, he’s always ready to learn or teach something new because, like everyone, he still has much to learn. He’s been having a lot of fun and headaches working with Unreal Engine 4 (and Cristiano) and hopes to transmit some of those onto you.

Git 101: where have you been all my life?

This will be an introduction to version control, specifically Git. We'll talk about the main concepts behind it and get some hands-on experience with its essential functionalities. Time allowing, we might get into some more advanced features that will definitely save you time and grief.

João Vale

João is an Automation Engineer that got started on the dev side of things. The systems part came later as a bit of a hobby and eventually evolved into working on building and automating a 1300+ node Openstack installation and its ecosystem at Blip (part of Paddy Power Betfair). When not indulging his allergy to manual tasks, you can probably find him going uphill on a motorcycle or downhill on a snowboard.

Let's Make TV

  • Duration: 2 Hours

In this workshop the participants are confronted with the proposal of a television news program, live, without stops, as in television.

Participants begin by attending a short theoretical introduction to the specific grammar of audiovisuals. Topics such as plans, frames, concepts of image, rule of thirds and third of image, camera movements, camera angulation and height, multi-camera work, studio interview and outdoor interview, etc. are discussed, an approach that lasts no more than half an hour.

Afterwards the participants are distributed by the functions they will occupy in the Newscast. (Editor, anchors, journalists, meteorologist, studio and street reporters, studio and overseas reporting camera operators, VT operators, video and audio mixer operators, graphic designers and assistants).

Each one is explained its function and, if appropriate, explained how the equipment with which it will work, works.

The necessary tests are performed (usually only 1 or 2) and the recording starts. At the end you see the work done.

António Proença Azevedo

Studied Marketing and Advertising. Was an advisor to the director of Public Relations and Advertising at one of the largest IT companies in Portugal, Regisconta.

He was general manager of marketing and advertising for a local radio station. He began to teach television and film in 1995 in several high schools at national level in the Paideia Program. He taught in various public and private schools.

He created the program "Let's Make Television", where more than 20,000 participants have already gone through, and in this program more than 200 films and more than 2,000 Newscasts. He has made several films among documentaries, advertising spots, short films and animations, having won some prizes at film festivals.

The scripts of several films he performed are his own, as well as several plays that were presented on stage.

Up and running with Elixir

  • Duration: 2 Hours
  • Schedule: April 14, Saturday, 17:15

If you know how to code, you should be able to learn how to do it in Elixir. We'll cover a few of the basics of the language but will also go over some of the more interesting aspects of the OTP. Functional programming and the Actor Model meet for a highly parallel and concurrent party, if this sounds fun, this is the workshop for you!

Requirements

Participants should have previous programming experience. They must bring their laptops with Elixir >= 1.6 and Erlang/OTP >= 20. We recommend using asdf to install these versions.

Luís Zamith

For the past 6 years Luís has worked on the web, mainly using Ruby and RoR, on @subvisual, a company he helped create. He enjoys open source and giving back to the community. He’s taught Rails to over 500 people, with workshops, university classes, mentoring and even 1-1 coaching. He loves experimenting with new, fun programming languages, from Haskell to Elixir or even Crystal.

Forever On The Chain: Ethereum 101

Picture a digital tattoo: a smart contract that anyone can use for free to leave a permanent message on the Ethereum blockchain.

That's what we'll be building during this workshop: a simple application that's great as an introduction to this new technology. Think Hello World but on the blockchain.

You'll learn some core concepts of blockchain and Ethereum such as smart contracts, transactions, and gas. Then, we'll build and test the contract and create a web interface to interact with it.

Júlio Santos

Júlio is a software engineer who started 4 companies. He's one of the founders of Life on Mars, a Porto-based software team with sky-high standards and aspirations. He's also the CTO of Fractal, a Berlin-based blockchain tech company. To this day, he has no idea what he's doing, but somehow keeps merrily chugging along in blissful oblivion.
